Cataracts

When we are born, the lens inside our eye is crystal clear. As we age, the fibers of the lens grow cloudy, and slowly reduces our vision. Often the vision loss is so slow that patients don’t notice. The most common early complaint of cataract is poor night time vision.

Cataracts are usually treated first with a change to our glasses or contact lens prescription, and then later with a procedure called cataract surgery. The procedure typically takes 20 minutes, is performed one eye at a time, and results in reduced need for eyeglass or contact lens prescription.

Because cataracts are typically painless, there is generally no urgency to scheduling the cataract procedure. Although, in rare cases, advanced progression of the condition can lead to disease such as glaucoma.
